The Past

I must say the past couple of days have gone well. I have been essentially raw. By this I mean the only thing I had that wasn't raw were 2 small pieces of organic mozzarella cheese, and a little bit of Annies Goddes dressing. Other than that it's been good. Also, I've been exercising at least an hour a day, which is fantastic. I'm really happy about that and I can feel the difference.

Odd thing though.. .today I went into my work and had a salad and a beer with this server I'm friends with. She was working and it's her last day so I just took the opportunity to go hang with her for a little while. I can't believe the immediate difference. My gut feels really really heavy and full. I feel sort of dead from the food and really nasty from the beer. It's like instant depression. Oh well is all I can say. I'm glad I chose to see her though. She's been a lot of fun to chat with during my time at that job and has really made some nights worth even going in.

I hope to see her next fall when she's back from Spain and back at school.

This brings me to another topic. This is my last day at work. I sort of had this plan to go out in style, which is really what everyone else does. Then I started to think to myself. Why do I need to be like anyone else, like at all? I don't, nor do I really see the benefit of such behavior. Plus people at work keep having get togethers for people as they leave and I really can't see one happening for me. It's just not my or their thing to go and hang with yours truly, which is pretty darn normal when you consider the age gap between me and them. I'm 37 and they are all 20-26... not a whole lot in common there. They are just discovering life and I'm just busy being myself.

I think that's really the greatest thing about being 37 is the ability to be myself. I'm happy to do it.

Harken Back

I look down at my fat hands and I harken back to the days of 250 lbs. That's a sad statement where I dream about the time when I simply look better. I don't even look good. I merely look better. I look at my fat head in photographs and I think, "how can you?" The truth is only I can answer these questions and they are a daily drama for me. That's the really important thing to keep in mind is that it really is a daily drama. It's a continuous struggle to see where I'm going to lead myself. I'm not really sad about it. That's just the way it is.

I've been thin and rather fit before and it never meant anything to me other than being obsessive in a way. I never really dealt with what was at hand. If I was thin it was because I out exercised my eating. I never faced my own issues, hurt and sadness to get to the root of what was bothering me. Now as I wear my daily fat suit I ponder these issues and questions all the time. I know that if I don't ponder these and look at them with my heart of hearts and kindness then I'll never be any different.

These issues are pervasive in my life and will obstruct anything and everything I try to do. I know that now and I feel good about it. Beyond that? well it's time to have some H20.

More on the Plan

So far the plan has not been strictly followed. I exercised for about 2 hours the first day. Yesterday it rained the entire day and I simply found the idea of going outside intolerable. I did manage to get some things done though. Today was a different story. I basically slept the entire day. I don't know why I needed to but apparently I did. It's funny. I slept an extra 4 hours today and I'm still tired at 11.45 pm. I didn't think it possible.

Food is still a strange thing to me. I have all the tendencies in the world toward binging. Hell I even do binge. However I'm getting nothing from the experience any longer. It really makes me wonder why people continue to do this sort of thing. Perhaps they never deal with what they need to deal with. I'm still very tended toward addictiveness. I still think about sex addictively. I still think about food like an addict yet when I participate in these activities they no longer hold the same "payoff" they once did. It's almost sad really but I guess that's what happens when I move on.

It feels really strange to move on. I mean I'm pushing 40 years old and in a couple years I'll be pushing it very hard and I still have no fucking idea what I truly want. I thought I did and I thought I wanted to do it with other people. The other people I chose to do things with were fucking flakes, so that's a no go. It's all on me. I don't feel like I need motivation from outside sources any longer. All I have to do is look at my daughter and feel like I want to get something done.

Anyway, more on the plan, tomorrow I'm going to get up, do a ball workout and then head out for a walk. I'm going to either go and hit some balls at the tennis court against the wall or see if my wife will play with me.

For breakfast I'm going to have a raw soaked granola with frozen cherries. I like that a lot. For lunch we're going to have more of that "crab cake" pate on cabbage. That was seriously good stuff. Then I'm going to make a watercress salad to go along with it. For dinner I'm going to make a pumpkin curry soup thing with butternut squash, and lemonade. We'll dip pizza bread in the soup and have some marinated greens as well.

The next few days look good weather wise so the exercise thing won't be a problem because of that.

More on today... it was strange.. all that sleep I mean. When I finally woke up I felt like I just didn't have time to do the things I wanted to get done. What happened instead was that I got done what I absolutely needed and then flaked off at night... took part in some activities and watched two dramatic episodes of the modern Battlestar Galactica. Yes, my life is truly inspirational. Time to go inspire!

The Plan

Well after a very long time floundering nutritionally and living style-wise, I've decided to really go after some things. The first is to be really kind and gentle with myself as far as food is concerned. My plan, as of yesterday, was to basically fast during the day for about a week then eat a meal. I fasted during the morning, had a great raw granola, then rode bike with my family over to a Penn State women's soccer game. They were in the NCAA tournament. It was a great time despite PSU's loss. The only problem was it was freakin cold! I didn't exactly feel like raw food after that. My wife suggested chili so we ended up going shopping for vegan chili ingredients.

This is hardly a failure of nutritional sorts. It's just not the absolute best thing I can put in my body. Everything was organic and not very processed. We ate that along with some organic whole grain bread. It was a very nice dinner with not too much going down the pipe.

This morning all I've had is water and a nutmilk and chocolate beverage with macca, spiralina, and blue-green algae. It was yummy, although I'm feeling the effects of the chocolate right now. I'm not all that thrilled about that, but the cacao helps with detox symptoms and detox is a real killer for me. For today i'm going to basically drink things and have a raw dinner.

The physical plan for me now is pretty aggressive in you consider how I've lived. My plan is to spend 2 hours a day exercising at least 5 days a week and exercise in some form every day, or at least 6 days per week. When I say exercise I don't mean 2 hours in the gym. My plan is to spread things out a bit and keep my metabolism going. Today for instance I'm going for a walk as soon as I finish this post and then I'm going out to the mall and doing some shopping. While shopping isn't really exercise it is activity for my fat body. We are going to play tennis later and I hope that lasts for about an hour. With the walk and tennis that's an hour and a half. I plan to do 10 minutes of step workout and then about 20 minutes on my exercise ball.

Tomorrow I'll have to do a longer ball workout and do walks when I can and it's not raining. I'll report back and let you know how this goes.

I really think it's time to get all my physical affairs in order. There are tons of reasons and I feel like I want to and I believe that I can. I don't feel the negative messages I normally do. Plus if it's a 2 hour exercise day and I only get an hour in, there is no way in hell that I'm going to feel like a failure. I'm going to feel great that I took enough care of myself to get an hour in. This is how I want to live from now on and this is how I want to focus.

Here I Am!

My life with raw food isn't really going very well, at least not in the food dept. Well I mean it is, but it's not raw. The funny thing is how I can look around myself and see soooooooo many ways to just get on with things and yet I choose really odd courses of action.

Anyway, I certainly digress. Here's how I'm living. I'm essentially vegetarian, mostly vegan even with some raw food thrown in there for effect. What I mean by essentially vegetarian is that I bought some organic, turkey gravy tonight to throw on some mash potatos, which had a little sour cream, tons of buttery spread (which is vegan and organic), salt and pepper. It's our pre thanksgiving day feast if you will. The funny thing is the rest of my week may be vegan, although not likely.

Tomorrow we are headed to Manhattan for my wife's 40th birthday. We are headed to this amazing raw restaurant called Pure Food and Wine, which is about the dumbest name in the world if you ask me but yet when I think about it, it's pretty darn cool, dichotmy at its finest. I've ordered a $125 birthday cake. It's a raw tiramisu. I'm looking forward to trying it but the entire trip for 3 days is costing us as much as it would take to get ALL our instruments fixed and everything in order pretty much. Grad student life isn't really made for $400/night hotel stays, but hey you only turn 40 once. And yeah.. I love my wife that much.

So anyway, tomorrow night's dinner will be raw. We'll probably stop at Whole foods when we first get into town and pick up some raw snacks and kombucha, man I love that stuff!!!. Then we'll hit the town. Hitting the town entails a lot of shopping. My hot 40/yo wife has to go to Banana Republic and get more clothes that make her look hot as hell. My daughter has to tag along and be super awesome and beautiful (we may get her almost 6 y/o ears pierced), and I get to go shopping at Casual Male, which is a big and tall mens store to basically minimize the damage when we go out tomorrow night. You see I'm a big fella. I'm tall, but not that tall, 6'1" and about 270. I'm a good 80 lbs overweight, which says a lot about how raw I really am.

I'd say I average a solid 30-40% raw food intake now and that's again on the upswing. I've been down to as low as 245 and eating 80% raw, and I felt great too, but that's not me right now. Funny thing is that I don't really see this as all that much of a struggle. I only see it as a series of choices based on what I think I want to do. Simple eh? well yes and no, see there's that damn dichotomy again... but whatever... really... all I can say is there have been a ton of benefits from my ways of eating. Take for instance I've only been sick really once in the last 5 years. My allergies are at least 30% better than they used to be, I'm not as angry, don't feel as aggresive, my skin has stopped being as dry, I think more clearly, and I less phlemy!

I'd say that's all pretty good stuff if you ask me, but there's more and lots more to be had.

Anyway, that's it for now. There's a lot more to my life than this little snipet and I'm sure I'll get into it at some point, but now is not the time. I've got to go pack and get ready for the trip. Oh just so you know, Manhattan is only a 4 hour drive away from where I am.

Talk to ya soon!
